“These Dreams” Lyric Interpretation
This is the 1st in a series of song/poem interpretation that will discuss the possible metaphysical meaning of popular lyrics and verses. These interpretations are my own analysis and of course will be presented with my own beliefs, emotions, insights and discernment. My aim for this series is to begin a conversation (even if within your own head) and the dissemination of ideas; instigate new understanding & perceptions of traditional (and common) beliefs, explication, and standards; and to create a deeper interest in the context, significance and nuance of our printed & spoken words.
THESE DREAMS written by Martin Page & Bernie Taupin, Performed by Heart & Released in 1986
[] Spare a little candle asking for help, reaching out to the subconscious
[] Save some light for me being a bit fearful but wanting to ‘see’, learn or try
[] Figures up ahead Moving in the trees secrets, shadows (unclear or undefined ‘dreams’) - whispering you need to take action, create some movement (energy)
[] White skin in linen Perfume on my wrist purity, simplicity - excitement (for date with destiny?), about preparing, a sense of readiness (willingness)
[] And the full moon that hangs over a light in the distance - the dream that seems so far away- the new dream
[] These dreams in the mist the dreams that haven’t come true, goals not reached
[] Darkness on the edge the shadows (worry, doubt, fears)
[] Shadows where I stand the worry, fears and doubt that inhabit the body (years/decades)
[] I search for the time On a watch with no hands making excuses to self, panic of the past - unable to believe in the future or outcome you want
[] I want to see you clearly Come closer than this still a glimmer of hope, of wanting to believe if could just grasp (and hold onto) courage to go after the dream
[] But all I remember Are the dreams in the mist but the power of the past won’t let go - memories of all those failed goals & unfulfilled dreams
Chorus will be explained once at the end ;-)
[] Is it cloak n dagger Could it be spring or fall feels scary, difficult - feeling like the idea, dream or goal (the spring) may not be relevant or attainable anymore (the fall)
[] I walk without a cut Through a stained glass wall daywalking (routine) like a ‘zombie’ in an invisible cell (the invisible boundaries in our own minds)
[] Weaker in my eyesight lack of focus, losing sight of the dream
[] The candle in my grip desperately holding onto the failing light - possibly a flicker of hope
[] And the words that have no form Falling from my lips the passion & meaning of your dreams not fully formed, unable to ‘speak’ them into existence
[] There’s something out there I can’t resist that pinpoint of light that keeps beckoning
[] I need to hide away from the pain memories of the past (ancestral pain) &/or past failures that you need to let go of
[] There’s something out there I can’t resist! thinking why do I keep doing this (trying) and causing myself more pain & disappointment
[] The sweetest song is silence That I’ve ever heard the relief and acceptance (even sense of peace) that comes from letting ‘reality’ sink in, relinquishing the dreams to live a life of ordinary (normal) and stop the noise in your mind
[] Funny how your feet In dreams never touch the earth the concern of not being grounded - letting go of lofty dreams (get your head out of the clouds - keep your feet firmly on the ground)
[] In a wood full of princes so many dreams that could be released (if could find the right one)
[] Freedom is a kiss and connecting with it (fulfillment) would release them all - give you the confidence to go for all of them!
[] But the prince hides his face From the dreams in the mist yet the right ONE eludes you - joins the forest of forgotten dreams
The chorus wraps it all up neatly… elegantly chiding the masses for our own lack of power in our own world of reality. It’s a constant battle we must wage to bring our dreams to fruition!
[] These dreams go on when I close my eyes your real desires often relegated to the dreamworld or believed to be fantasies
[] Every second of the night I live another life taking joy in every second of the dream state to escape your reality (like a good fantasy movie you watch every night)
[] These dreams that sleep when it’s cold outside and the fantasy must be pushed aside (or down deep) when you wake to the harshness of the real world
[] Every moment I’m awake the further I’m away and the more you focus on the ‘real world’ and the day to day stressors & all the tasks that must be completed, etc, the further you move away from the ‘dream life’ - putting it off , pushing it down, not believing you can have it!
“The possibility of the dream gives strength.”
― Lailah Gifty Akita, Pearls of Wisdom: Great mind
SUMMARY This is my favorite Heart song and I love the video (I’m an 80’s girl) and I know now why I feel such a connection to the lyrics. My dreams throughout life have often been lofty; some have come true, some have not… the difference being whether I let everyday life smother them or let someone’s negative comments take hold and made me believe I couldn’t do what was necessary or that I didn’t deserve them.
Making a dream a reality is up to each one of us! No one else is to blame, the world is not to blame, and family is definitely not to blame. It is our own mind and heart and gut that makes our dreams come to fruition. Dreams are hard work! They are also exciting, fun and gain momentum if we only just give them the attention they require.
MAKE YOUR DREAMS A REALITY
One thing dream-building requires is the openness to really receive them, meaning you must dare to dream. You must want more. You must be willing to fantasize (dream BIG) and let them take hold in your mind and heart. You must be willing to dream up the dream and believe you can have it.
Often, people do not have a real dream, much less a BIG dream. Why would someone not have a dream?
they are satisfied with their life (perhaps they have reached their dream)
they are too afraid to want more
they do not feel ‘good enough’ to have more than they currently do - they feel too undeserving or unworthy
they are hyper-focused on the current reality (no time to dream - too busy)
they have been sheltered from the outside world (or live in an area where government, terrorists or a leader has control)
their religious beliefs forbid it (or possibly discourage)
HOW do you motivate yourself to make your dreams your reality?
Start small to gain confidence and build your courage! Baby steps may not feel like you are doing much yet at the end of a week or month, you will notice much improvement! The key is to begin. It took you years to reach the state you are in (possibly a lifetime) so be kind to yourself and give yourself time to recoup, rebuild, and rejuvenate your life <3
Let’s start by doing some brainstorming exercises. You can do these all in the same day if you allot the time or do one exercise a day (preferably all within a week to keep motivated to move to the next step).
Jot down all the things you do not want anymore - things you do not like or need any longer; include people, places, situations, things. Don’t be afraid to make a long, detailed list; this is an instance where less is not more! Later, you may want to shred it up, burn it or even bury it as part of a ‘letting that sh** go’ ritual but hang onto it for now bc you may want to refer to it during other exercises.
Write down all the things you do want - you can be as broad or narrow in your focus as you want in this exercise. Perhaps you are not quite sure about details yet and that is okay; the point is to start that dream-builder machine in your heart again, so you might be thinking in more general terms (like being financially prosperous, being in a healthy romantic relationship, traveling, living on lakefront, or having a job you really enjoy).
Ponder the things you want, really think about how they will change your life. If you had these things, people, situations in your life, how many things from the first list go away? Imagine yourself having/doing these things. How do you feel? Jot down these feelings and emotions. Do you feel any unexpected emotions? Can you journal about them for a bit - try to reach the core of why this emotion or feeling came to the surface?
Now that you have these lists going, choose a dream. You can repeat this exercise over & over so it’s best to focus on one at a time (and combine them together later). Choose the ideal you desire the most. Now sit back or lie down and take some deep breaths to ready your body; relax as well as you can, get into that dreamy, about to dose off state. Feel the way you think you’ll feel when you have achieved this dream. Breathe into the feeling, let your body tingle (or relax deeper). Now pretend you are just waking up and go through an ideal ‘day in the life’ of your new reality. Be as detailed as you can be in this exercise. Feel all the feels! Smile. Laugh. Cry if you want. This is your time. Your dream time! If you actually get to release some old doubts, fears… all the better!
Stay positive! This is key; once you taste the dream in your waking life, it is difficult to let it go so take some time daily to relive a snippet of the dream - or even better, expand on it. Emote the happiness and be grateful for this new dream life. Yes, be grateful for the dream and the future fruition of the dream. Affirm that it is coming, that it will be yours… and eventually be grateful in the present tense (It IS mine!) if you cannot feel it & believe it in the beginning. This is clearing the sky for that fullness of moon (the new dream) and keeping the face of the moon looking upward (not down at the mist).
Light up the sky! Project your dream onto the darkness of the night sky. Watch the moon smile and beam it into space! There will be a guided meditation for this post on the EW YouTube channel soon! Please subscribe to our new channel to see when new material is posted.
